Royal Marines PJFA versus CPC

The Pre-Joining Fitness Assessment and the Royal Marines Candidate Preparation Course are separate steps. Confusing them can distort your preparation.

See the sequence before the sessions

The Royal Navy's Royal Marines joining pathway lists the PJFA before the Candidate Preparation Course. PJFA introduces contact with the InReach team; CPC is a further assessed stage. Your most useful first action is to confirm which event you have been invited to attend, what the current joining instructions require and whether your circumstances change the sequence.

02 / 05

Why the published CPC duration differs

At the time of this review, the Royal Marines joining-process overview describes a four-day CPC, while the dedicated CPC page describes a five-day course. Both are Royal Navy pages. Rather than invent a reconciled timetable, treat the official invitation and your recruiting adviser as authoritative for your own date.

03 / 05

Understand the dimensions of CPC

The dedicated official CPC page describes an aerobic assessment, press-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, swimming and confidence-and-determination activities. That does not mean an independent website can prescribe exact pass scores, make a medical decision or recreate the environment. The useful preparation question is whether your broad training has become consistent, supervised where necessary and proportionate to your starting point.

04 / 05

Ask the right recruiting questions

If the invitation and website disagree, ask which document governs your intake, what equipment or medical instructions apply and when confirmation will arrive. Keep a single source-of-truth note. Avoid spending money on training framed around an old screenshot or a social-media account that may relate to a different year.

05 / 05

Keep official and independent roles distinct

The Royal Navy decides eligibility, joining sequence and assessment outcomes. Independent coaching, where appropriately staffed, could help with general fitness consistency and education, but it does not replace the InReach team or an authorised training programme.

An exercise to make this useful

Make a one-page timeline: application, interview, PJFA, CPC, orientation and initial training. Beside each milestone write the official source or personal joining instruction you can actually cite.

These references support the published pathway or general safety guidance. An independent exercise is our own educational example; it does not reproduce military assessments. Check any changed requirements directly with the responsible authority.

A distinction worth checking before you act

PJFA and CPC are separate stages

The official joining overview places the pre-joining fitness assessment before the Royal Marine Candidate Preparation Course and describes it as an opportunity to meet the in-reach team before the more demanding course.

Why it changes your decision

An applicant preparing for PJFA needs the correct stage-specific conversation and any personal medical or recruiter instructions, rather than attempting to simulate the later CPC independently.

Ask the responsible authority

Which event am I actually attending, what does my recruiter expect, and where is the Navy's free stage-specific preparation material?
